From Darkness into Light!

Years ago I was going through almost inhuman stress. I was teaching high school in 1969, and the kids were creating revolution by ringing the fire bells incessantly, setting fire to the American flag, and throwing cups and flying saucers around in the lunchroom. I did my best to break up fights and create order, as that was part of my job (in addition to being an educator!), and on the surface I seemed centered and in charge. But underneath, I was a wreck. I’d go home at night and stare at the walls trying to get centered. I did everything I knew how to do to heal my headaches. This was in Chicago, and soon I made a decision to move back to California, where I had previously lived before I took a detour in Chicago. Someone I knew suggested that I try yoga. I didn’t know a lot about it at the time, but I decided to go to a class in San Francisco.

I was in for a huge surprise. The class was in a center created from a converted Victorian building. I climbed some winding stairs slowly because I wanted to take this experience in. The smells and the scents were intoxicating—fresh baking and incense—and there was a relaxing feeling as if people had been meditating there for centuries. The class was on the top floor, which had sprawling green plants situated around the edges, and a large skylight to let in the sun and grow the green plants. The yoga was so relaxing! It began to melt away my accumulated stress and carry me into another dimension.

And the greatest part of this was at the end of the deep relaxation process, quietly relaxing every muscle, every nerve, every bone, I was transported into a realm that I could only dream about before this. And I said to myself: “This is what I’ve been looking for. This is the answer for me. No more headache pills. Do this instead. This is the real thing!”

And from that moment, I decided that pursuing this state of being had to be the aim of my life. Subsequently, I took up yoga and learned deeper meditation, became a yoga teacher, read profound books on healing and spiritual life.

To find this relaxing transcendent place inside my being was the most important part of my life. But why?

  • It took me closer to my soul, here I found another way of looking at things that at one point were uncomfortable or troubling or even innocent. But I always found a new way to view them.
  • It healed my body and quieted my mind.
  • It provided a sanctuary where I could go to find my real self and take time off from the world as it is.
  • It centered me, reminded me that I’m more that just this body and mind, this identity that the world sees. There’s much more here.
  • It proved to be the core of excellence and higher understanding.
  • It was the way to evolve to higher and higher levels of understanding and perception.
  • It was and is a perfect way to raise the quality of my existence.

I don’t proselytize and tell people they have to do what I did—but I stand as a possibility for people who are looking for more meaning and for a way to deepen and expand the quality of their lives.

To go deep inside and find out what’s there, to take a minute to see and feel the profound vibration that always exists –this is a high pinnacle of human life.

Come join me in my program “Ageless Transformation,” a program for people in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond to raise the quality of existence for ourselves and for the world.
